Our History
Since 1907, Horizon Bank has been a trusted partner for Nebraska families and businesses — standing with our communities through every season.
The oldest business in Waverly
What began as Lancaster County Bank in 1907 has grown into a trusted community institution serving four Nebraska communities. Through more than a century of service, Horizon Bank has remained locally owned, locally operated, and deeply committed to the people it serves.
The bank has stood with customers through wars, the depression, inflation, and recession — always with the same philosophy: know your customers, serve them well, and invest in the community.
A Timeline of Growth
Where It All Began
Horizon Bank began as Lancaster County Bank and is the oldest business in Waverly. From the very start, the bank was built on a commitment to serving the local community.
A New Home on Main Street
The bank moved into a new, brick building at the corner of 142nd Street & Jamestown — a landmark that would anchor the community for decades.
The Dunlap Family Era
M. W. Dunlap purchased Lancaster County Bank and became only the fourth owner in bank history. The bank has been owned by the Dunlap family since that time. Longevity of service by Horizon Bank employees remains consistent with the bank's historic stability of ownership.
Moving Across the Street
The bank moved across the street to its present location — a move that positioned it for the growth and expansion that would follow.
Remodel & Expansion
The existing building was remodeled in 1993 and expanded in 2014. The current downtown location is only the third since our beginning in 1907. The bank has stood with customers through wars, the depression, inflation, and recession.
A Second Location
Waverly added a second location inside the True Value store.
Horizon Bank Is Born
The Horizon Bank name was born in July of 2001. This name change helped to facilitate the purchase of a branch in Superior, Nebraska in August of 2001 — marking the bank's first expansion beyond Waverly.
Stand-Alone South Branch
The south branch moved out of True Value and into its own stand-alone location across the street.
Reaching Southwest Nebraska
It was time to grow again. Horizon Bank began to serve customers in McCook, Nebraska, extending its reach to the southwest corner of the state.
Remodeled Both Waverly Branches
In 2011 a remodel doubled the Waverly-South building size, creating more space for staff & customers. In 2014 a remodel of the Waverly – North flipped the drive-thru location from the North of the building to the South side & added more offices for our growing LIHTC team. These remodels signaled a continued investment in the community.
Springfield Joins the Family
Horizon Bank acquired a location in Springfield, Nebraska, bringing the total to five locations across four communities served across the state.
Committed to our communities
Horizon Bank is firmly committed to serving the needs of all four of its communities. Whether personal or business banking, small business lending, or volunteering within the community, Horizon Bank is present and willing to help.
Our stability of ownership — the Dunlap family since 1958 — means decisions are made locally, by people who understand the communities they serve. That’s a promise we’ve kept for over a century.
